Safer Made LP makes early stage investments in companies and technologies that create products safer for people and the natural world by removing or reducing the use of harmful chemicals.

Product material safety is a driver of consumer and institutional purchasing decisions, reshaping entire product categories and sectors. Major brands and retailers are seeking new, safer products and technologies that will provide competitive advantage and protect their brands.

We work closely with leading brand manufacturers to understand their safer chemistry needs, invest in the technologies they need, get referred potential investment opportunities, co-invest, and partner for pilot projects. We invest in technologies that translate into competitive advantage, and have a direct link to consumer or institutional demand for safer products.

The principals of Safer Made have complementary skills and backgrounds and an established track record of investing in and building early stage companies, as well as of working with leading manufacturers to help design and evaluate alternatives to harmful chemicals.

Adrian is an experienced venture investor who knows how to put together and finance early stage companies, and how to run a venture fund.

Marty founded and ran the Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry and is a well-respected name in the green chemistry community. He has worked with many Fortune 500 companies to help them replace hazardous chemicals with safer alternatives.

Financial description

Safer Made invests at an early stage in companies that address a proven need, have technologies tested in early commercial settings, a strong competitive position, a clear path to market, a team with the skills and capabilities to deliver on the financing stage goals, a suitable capital base, and the potential to deliver a 5 to 10X return within five to seven years. Our management fee is 2.5%, capped at $500,000.
Our investment strategy is based on: a deep understanding of performance criteria that drive the use of harmful chemicals, focusing on performance materials, investing in technologies that translate into competitive advantage, and working closely with leading manufacturers.
Understanding the criteria that drive the use of harmful materials is key for finding alternatives. It will enable us to source deals from a wider universe and increase the chances of adoption.
Most of the materials we support are performance materials that do not require solving for scale issues upfront and are sold into high margin specialty chemicals markets.
We focus on technologies that translate into competitive advantage, and address consumer or institutional demand. This will enable them to generate high gross margins and create significant value.
We work closely with leading brand manufacturers to understand their safer chemistry needs, invest in the technologies they need, get referred potential investment opportunities, co-invest, and partner for pilot projects.

Impact Performance

Impact thesis

Safer Made's mission is to invest in companies that create safer alternatives for people and the environment by reducing exposure to potentially harmful materials in products and supply chains.
Safer Made invests in three types of opportunities:
• Companies that develop safer, high-performance materials and chemistries that displace harmful materials and chemistries
• Companies that develop manufacturing technologies or information tools that enable the use of safer materials and chemistries or have safety as an important outcome
• Companies that bring to market products that have a proprietary technology that makes them safer.
A successful investment by Safer Made should result in a meaningful contribution to a significant human or environmental health issue. The technology or product should be safe itself and have the potential to reach significant scale and take market share from existing less safe technologies or products. The safety benefits should scale with the growth of the company.
