Building on RSF’s more than 25 years of experience in social enterprise lending, the RSF PRI Fund reduces the barriers to entry for foundations that want to leverage their philanthropic dollars through Program-Related Investing (PRI), but that lack the in-house expertise to source, underwrite, service, and monitor loans. With a minimum investment of $100,000 and a five-year term, foundations receive a 1% annual return and can ultimately “recycle” their investment toward additional PRIs or grants. Because the RSF PRI Funds are a pooled investment vehicle, foundations also support a wider range of projects than would otherwise be possible, which both mitigates risk and maximizes social impact.
Local and sustainable food system projects serve a variety of foundation mission areas. It is because of these wide-reaching impacts that RSF chose to specifically focus the PRI Fund in Food & Agriculture.
Financial description
The fund has a five year term, a minimum $100,000 investment and returns 1% per annum.
The PRI Notes pay 1% per annum, computed on the basis of actual calendar days elapsed and a year of 365 days. Interest will be computed and paid quarterly. Investors may choose to donate interest to RSF for its operations. Each PRI Note has a term of (5) fi ve years. At maturity, the investor may extend the maturity date for 5 years upon the request of the Fund. Proceeds from the PRI Notes are used to make PRIs to recipients to fund charitable projects that conform to the IRS Program-Related Investing requirements and generate deep impact in the field of food and agriculture.

Impact thesis
RSF has chosen Food & Agriculture as the focus for its first PRI Fund because of its wide-reaching benefits. Local and sustainable food system projects impact a variety of foundation mission areas, including:
- Regional food systems
- Healthy ecological systems
- Urban and rural economic development
- Safe and equitable labor conditions
- Increased access to healthy food in underserved areas
The fund specifically focuses on organizations overcoming two of the major hurdles in creating local food systems: processing and distribution.
