The MaRS Cleantech Fund LP invests in early-stage, high-impact Cleantech companies from the MaRS Cleantech pipeline. Our partnership with MaRS ushers in a new model of public/private partnerships that enables a unique model of technology investing. MaRS is one of the largest innovation centers in the world at 1.5 million sq ft in downtown Toronto, and the MaRS Cleantech Practice is well-recognized as Canada's strongest source of Cleantech dealflow. The fund management team has strong entrepreneurial backgrounds, and targets capital efficient companies with strong intellectual property, global opportunities and strong management teams. We target companies that can move the needle on key environmental indicators (low-carbon energy production and efficiency, biofuels, Smartgrid, waste recycling), but who can do it in the market today without policy support. The Fund managers play a strong and active role in building the company.

Financial description

The Fund intends to invest in early-stage, high-impact companies across the Cleantech spectrum up to a maximum of three million dollars ($3,000,000) in each portfolio investment, including follow-on investments. Investments will be distributed across a diversified portfolio of early stage Cleantech companies. The Fund will focus, but not limit, its investing to MaRS clients that the Investment Managers determine have the greatest market potential. MaRS has indicated its willingness to introduce the Fund and the Investment Managers to its Cleantech clients, and to assist with the process of completing capital investments by the Fund in these clients.

Impact Performance

n.a.

Impact thesis

Cleantech companies that move the needle on carbon mitigation and resource sustainability. Our target indicators are carbon mitigation and waste recycling. We invest in low-carbon infrastructure (biofuels, renewable energy production, energy storage, energy efficiency, SmartGrid) and materials reclamation. We do not invest in companies that require policy support, rather those that have a strong value proposition in current market conditions. We also target a key market-funding gap, that of early-stage technology venture investing up to $3 million.
