Conservation Note

United States of America

Last updated 11 May 2020, by Impactyield.

Edit this fund

The Nature Conservancy’s Conservation Note is a fixed income product that channels capital to conservation-critical lands and waters, providing increased capacity to finance high-priority conservation projects around the world. Examples of projects include property being resold to a government agency, institution, or conservation buyer, with easements or restrictions in place to ensure that the Conservancy’s long-term conservation objectives for the project are met.

Private capital can therefore leverage public dollars for conservation. Individual and institutional investors earn a fixed rate of interest, while generating environmental returns that are measured in acres protected, landscapes preserved, and habitat restored.

Impact thesis

The bulk of the Conservancy’s resources — human and financial — are focused on working with others to execute the conservation strategies we develop together. In its early years, the Conservancy focused largely on land acquisition to achieve its mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Over the decades, in response to increasing environmental threats, we have expanded the array of methods and tools we use to achieve lasting conservation results. In each place we work, we tailor our approach to local circumstances — natural and human — using science-driven methods, tools and techniques that have proven successful in addressing conservation challenges. Our projects include compatible economic development; conservation land acquisition; market-based conservation transactions; innovative conservation finance; public finance campaigns; conservation-friendly public policies; restoring degraded lands; working with business, public agencies, and community organizations.
