Self-Help is one of the oldest and largest Community Development Financial Institutions in the U.S. Its mission is to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity for low-wealth families and communities. Self-Help provides loans and financial services for business development, community facilities and consumer financial security. Self-Help’s Environmental Initiative supports projects that provide environmental and economic benefits to low-wealth communities. Self-Help is composed of several organizations dedicated to the same mission. These Include two community development credit unions (Self-Help Credit Union and Self-Help Federal Credit Union), a non-profit loan fund (Self-Help Ventures Fund), a policy group that fights abusive and predatory financial practices (Center for Responsible Lending) and a real estate development non-profit (Self-Help CDC). Self-Help has received numerous awards and is featured in the book Forces for Good as one of 12 high-impact non-profit organizations
