Accion is a global nonprofit dedicated to building a financially inclusive world with access to economic opportunity for all, by giving people the financial tools they need to improve their lives. In the area of investing, Accion provides early-stage equity, quasi-equity financing and loan guarantees to help MFIs become independent of donor funds, build their capital base, attract deposits and attain financial leverage; Accion also invests in financial services beyond microfinance to cultivate a financial ecosystem that will radically enhance the efficiency, reach and scope of financial services at the base of the economic pyramid.
Accion’s investment experience spans over a quarter of a century, beginning in 1984 with the launch of the Accion Bridge Fund which guarantees local currency borrowings and the issuance of fixed-income instruments to link MFIs to commercial banks and capital markets. In the ensuing decades, Accion has launched, sponsored and/or wholly managed three microfinance equity funds that all have or are on track to significantly outperform their market peers (as measured by traditional private equity funds operating in similar regions and vintage years).
