CEI is a private, non-profit community development financial institution founded in 1977 whose mission is to help create economically and environmentally healthy communities in which all people, especially those with low incomes, can reach their full potential. CEI provides debt and equity to small, medium and micro-enterprises, natural resource-based enterprises, affordable housing and community facilities to generate economic, social and environmental benefits for people and communities in Maine, northern New England and rural regions of the US. At 9/30/13, CEI had $980 million in capital under management and had deployed $1.05 billion to 2,340 projects with 28,246 quality jobs. CEI helped create 5,547 child care slots and 1,587 units of affordable housing, preserve farmland and waterfront access for fishermen, and support alternative energy and the implementation of green practices. CEI has delivered training and technical assistance to 46,040 aspiring and existing entrepreneurs, first-time homebuyers and families facing foreclosure. CEI aggregates and deploys capital from diverse private and public sources to respond to a range of impact investment opportunities.
