The Lyme Timber Company is a leader in the field of conservation investment and sustainable forest and land management. Lyme invests in North American forestland and rural real estate properties with high conservation value, often in partnership with conservation organizations, land trusts and/or public natural resource agencies. The Company works to monetize the non-timber values in the investment (such as development rights, public access and sensitive ecological areas) through the sale of a working forest conservation easement. The easement sale permanently protects the land base and other ecosystem services, and reduces the cost basis of the investment. Lyme then manages the timber sustainably, usually under Forest Stewardship Council third party certification. Lyme also invests in wetland and species mitigation banks and other emerging conservation investment opportunities.

Impact thesis
Lyme's impact is primarily defined through landscape scale forestland conservation and favorable community development outcomes. By investing in and protecting forest land, Lyme preserves open space that provides clean water, soil conservation, carbon sequestration and wildlife habitat. Many of these conserved lands are adjacent to existing protected lands (such as state parks or national forests), thus increasing the amount of contiguous conservation land. Also, by sustainably managing forests, Lyme provides wood, a renewable and environmentally superior resource, while providing jobs and other community benefits. Many of Lyme's investments have utilized favorable financing through the federal New Markets Tax Credit program, which has helped low income, high unemployment areas achieve community economic development goals.
